Natural skin care products can be pricey, so why not follow some of these easy and cheap to make recipes for your own natural skin and hair products.
Creating your own natural skin care products can be expensive. A lot of the DIY books give lists of ingredients that you either don't have or cost a lot to buy. So here are a few recipes that are easy to make and won't break the bank.
FACE
For a simple face wash
2 tbsp fine sugar + 1 tbsp olive oil
Stir together, apply to face, and wipe off with warm cloth. Avoid sensitive eye area.
For a simple moisturiser
Coconut oil is great as a moisturiser, on the face and body. It is naturally full of lauric acid which supports collagen and is easily absorbed by the skin. Even those with oily and acne prone skin, coconut oil’s natural anti-bacterial properties make it hugely beneficial. Coconut oil on cotton wool is also a great way to remove eye make up, even waterprrof mascara.
For a simple and refreshing toner
1 mint tea bag + 1 chamomile tea bag
Measure 4 cups of boiled water. Add tea bags and let steep for 10 minutes. Cool. Apply to face after cleaning and rinsing, using a cloth or spray bottle. Lasts 2-3 weeks.
Chamomile is often used for eczema and other skin conditions as it is soothing. The peppermint adds refreshment.
For a simple cleanser & to treat acne
Using diluted apple cider vinegar (ACV) as a facial cleanser unblocks pores, illiminates oil build up and balances the pH of your skin by balancing sebum production. Good quality ACV, contains the 'mother' of all vinegar - the cloudy sediment that sinks to the bottom of the bottle. This is high in beneficial bacteria, enzymes, pectin and trace minerals. The beneficial bacteria make ACV a good anti-bacterial and anti-fungal cleanser.
Dilute 1 part ACV with 1 part water and mix throughly. Cleanse face with a cotton bud, gently gliding over the skin.
Leave on your face for around 5 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
If using ACV for the first time, do test a small patch of skin incase you get a reaction. The best place is under the chin which is less noticeable if you do react. It is best to apply the ACV toner at night as ACV can increase sensitivity to ultra-violet rays.
BODY
For a body scrub
There are many different ingredients you can use in a body scrub, helping to remove dead skin and increase blood circluation to the skin. Here is a choice of three.
Coffee Scrub: 3 tbsp coffee grounds (that were just used for brewing) + 1 tbsp salt
Mix together and rub all over body while you’re in the shower. Rinse thoroughly. The shower will smell like fresh coffee!
When applied topically, coffee is considered to reduce the appearance of cellulite as it tightens skin and provides antioxidants.
Salt Scrub: 4 tbsp fine sea salt + 2-3 tbsp olive oil
Mix together. Add as much olive oil as you want to find the right consistency. Rub all over body in the shower. You may feel a bit oily, but as soon as you towel off, your skin will feel wonderfully exfoliated and moisturised.
For a more delicate scrub:
Flour Scrub: Flour: Almond, brown rice, oat, or chickpea + water
1tbsp flour + water
Scoop out some flour, add enough water to form a paste in your hand, and rub all over body or face to exfoliate.
Swaping the water for milk and adding a tablespoon of honey can provide a soothing element.
You can add essential oils or dried herbs and flowers to your scrubs for a delicious scent. Or add orange juice for a more refreshing scrub.
For a body butter
2 cups coconut oil + few drops essential oil
Put the coconut oil into a mixer. Add some drops of essential oil. Whisk until it becomes light and fluffy, then scoop into a closed container or jar, ready for massaging into your skin.
HAIR
For a simple conditioner
1 mashed avocado + ¼ cup coconut milk (or yogurt)
Stir together and comb through hair prior to washing. Wrap in a towel for 10-15 minutes. Wash out with shampoo.
To clean and rinse
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar + 2 cups water
ACV is great for removing build-up and adding shine. Mix together and pour over wet, cleaned hair. Rinse. (You can also do the same with fresh lemon juice instead of ACV.)
A lot of people who remove shop bought shampoos and conditioners from their beauty regime have found ACV a great alternative. Not only does it remove dirt and add sine, but it balances the pH of the scalp to prevent a build up of oil, it seals hair cuticles which makes hair softer, it detangles hair and because it cleans hair follicles, it prevents bacterial infection which can result in hair loss.
